Considering Breast Implants? Ask Your Plastic Surgeon These Key Questions

Health & Medical Blog

If you're considering a breast augmentation in the form of breast implants, then of course you'll want to take your time and shop around for the right surgeon. In fact, you should even sit down and speak in-person with a few local surgeons until you're confident in your choice. As you meet with each potential surgeon, there are some specific questions you'll want to be sure to ask.

1. Do You Have Before and After Photos Available?

The best way to get an idea of a surgeon's experience and work is to ask them for a portfolio of before and after photos. Make sure to confirm that these photos are of real patients that he or she has performed surgery on, and not just stock images. This is a great way to get a better idea of what to expect from the surgeon's work.

2. Are Silicone or Saline Implants Better?

There is a lot of debate as to whether silicone breast implants or saline breast implants are the better choice, and ultimately, it may boil down to what's right for your unique situation. When consulting with a surgeon, then, be sure to ask about their recommendations based on how large you want your implants, your current chest size, and other important factors.

3. What Kind of Warranty Do You Offer on Implants?

While it may seem odd to ask about a "warranty" on a breast implant, this is more common practice than you might think. You'll want to make sure that you're covered in the event that your implant ruptures, as it can be costly to have this fixed. Often times, surgeons will offer a warranty on ruptures that will protect patients from these costs. Fortunately, ruptures are not common, but you'll still want the added peace of mind.

4. What Emergency Plans Do You Have in Place?

Since breast augmentation does require general anesthesia, you'll want to make sure that all precautions are in place on the day of your procedure. Not only should you be sure that your anesthesia will be administered by a certified anesthesiologist, but that there are emergency plans in place in the unlikely event that there are any problems.

These are just a few questions that you should ask a surgeon when deciding on breast augmentation surgery. From there, you can make a better informed decision and feel more confident going into your surgery.

Help Others Make Health Decisions when They Cannot

One day I was playing a game of basketball with a friend, and the friend I was playing ball with tripped and took a hard fall to the ground. He hit his head hard, but he insisted he was okay and just wanted to go home and take a nap. I knew in my heart that he was not thinking clearly, and I didn't feel right letting him go home. I talked him into letting me take him to the hospital, and after some tests, it was determined he had a bad concussion. The doctors told me that if I had let him go home and sleep, things could have taken a turn for the worse. I created this blog to remind everyone to look out for each other after injuries. Not everyone thinks clearly after a head injury, and just being a good friend could save a life.
